Scope and Content Note

This series contains bills, vouchers, and abstracts of expenditures submitted by resident engineers to the Department of Audit and Control.

Each abstract lists amounts owed by the state for salaries, wages, expenses, material, equipment, and supplies, and gives the geographic district number or the terminal location. The abstract is accompanied by the original bills and vouchers documenting claims against the state. The abstract gives the geographical district number or, instead, the terminal location.

B0921-02: This accretion documents the functions of the Comptroller's Office with regard to apportioning salaries and scheduling accounts during the construction of the Barge Canal. Volume 1, Payrolls, Canal Bureau and Attorney General; Expense Accounts, Engineer and Surveyor (1922-1923), itemizes salaries of employees of the State Engineer and Surveyor and the Attorney General's Office (the Barge Canal law of 1903 authorized the Attorney General to approve the forms of contracts and contractor securities for work performed on the Barge Canal). Information includes amount of salary, recipient's name, title of position, and schedule of accounts. Volume 2, Abstracts of payrolls of Superintendent of Public Works (1922-1923), documents abstracts of expenditures. The volume is roughly arranged by chapter law and itemizes titles, appropriations for titles, and amounts payable.
