Scope and Content Note

These volumes are transcriptions of the original tax roll, made either for an administrative hearing or a judicial proceeding in which taxation of state lands for school purposes was at issue. The state land involved was Sing Sing Prison. The rolls provide names of taxable residents (by street) and non-residents, type of property (house, store, etc.), acreage and full assessed valuation. The territory of Union School District No. 1 included the village of Ossining and Briarcliff Manor, and portions of the town of Ossining.
