Scope and Content Note

These files document instances of inmate misconduct, disciplinary action, and review of the disciplinary action by the institution's Adjustment Committee. The files relate to misconduct cases for approximately 500 inmates covering the period from about 1964 to 1974.

The files usually contain similar documentation including: memorandums and infraction reports from an institution officer to the superintendent describing misconduct and the general behavior of an inmate; Adjustment Committee reports containing a summary of the infraction and resulting punishment, an inmate explanation of the circumstances, and the decision by the Committee on the need for further review; and a notification of the decision by the Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services pertaining to a case of punishment given an inmate. Files may include a number of letters from an inmate to Bedford's superintendent or another officer, usually describing situations of misconduct by other inmates.
