Scope and Content Note

This series contains records produced by or for State Comptroller Arthur Levitt and his staff in the course of their constitutionally mandated duties of maintaining the state's accounts; paying the state's bills and payrolls; auditing the financial and management practices of the state's departments, divisions, offices, and public authorities; examining the fiscal affairs of all units of local government in the state; reviewing the financial plans and fiscal and management practices of New York City and organizations affiliated with it; administering the state's public employee retirement systems; investing the funds of the state as well as monies held by the state in custody for others; administering the state's cash flow; and serving as a source of fiscal legal advice for both state agencies and local governments.

These records include personal and official correspondence to the state comptroller from 1955 to 1978 and copies of his replies, schedules of his activities (1970-1978), committee files (1955-1969), subject files, speeches, published opinions of the attorney general [ca. 1944-1977], published annual financial reports of the comptroller (1936-1978), and special reports of the comptroller [ca. 1957-1975].
