Scope and Content Note

The series consists of a quota book summarizing statistics on the recruitment of troops for the state (not federal) draft of 1862. The statistical form was produced by the Adjutant General's office to direct local officials on the required numbers of draftees or volunteers enrolled and not exempt by town and city ward.

For each county statistics are given for population and quota (as a percentage of population and fixed at 5 per cent). In tabular form, the following statistics are provided for each town: population, quota for 120,000 population, 5 percent (figures typically crossed out), total (figures typically crossed out), number of volunteers raised, surplus, and deficit.

The cover of the volume reads "Hon. Thomas Hillhouse." Mr. Hillhouse was Adjutant General from August 19, 1961 through the end of 1862. He had previously served as state senator for the 26th district from 1860-1861.
