Scope and Content Note

This series contains records from the Utica State Hospital (later Utica Psychiatric Center) School of Nursing. A very small amount of information for Marcy State Hospital School of Nursing and affiliated schools at Faxon Hospital and St. Luke's Memorial Hospital Center is also included.

Types of records include photographs (ca. 1920-1976); histories of nursing; student handbooks; clipping files; faculty correspondence and memoranda; resignations of students; curricula; treasurer's reports; minutes of faculty meetings; news releases on graduations; lists of graduates; school brochures; graduation invitations and announcements; and capping and chevron exercise announcements. Also found in the series are records of the School of Nursing Alumni Association which include lists of alumni with names, dates of graduation, current addresses, and places of employment; minutes of meetings; lists of members; and dues paid.

B1559-97A: This accretion consists of ca. 3,500 index cards containing information on individual students of the Utica State Hospital (later Utica Psychiatric Center) School of Nursing. Information contained on the cards varies slightly over time but typically includes name of student; name of school of nursing; home address; date of birth; religion; social security number; telephone number; next of kin; admission date; and separation date. Remarks are rarely included.

The cards are arranged in four categories. The largest group documents students of hospitals that were affiliated with Utica State Hospital School of Nursing. These include St. Joseph's Hospital (Elmira); Syracuse Memorial Hospital; Faxton Hospital (Utica); Syracuse General Hospital; St. Luke's Hospital (Utica); Utica Memorial Hospital; Auburn Memorial Hospital; Community General Hospital (Ithaca); St. Mary's Hospital (Amsterdam); St. Barnabas Hospital (Bronx); and Samaritan Hospital (Troy).

Alumni cards document students who graduated from Utica State Hospital School of Nursing. In addition to the usual information, these cards give graduation dates. Space is provided for date of state board examination and license number, but the information is never provided. Some cards are cross-indexed for name changes, some have address change notations, and some give dates of deaths.

Another group of cards provides similar information for students who attended Utica State Hospital School of Nursing, but did not graduate.

A small group of printed cards lists by year (1928-1939) names of all training school graduates for New York State hospitals.

B1559-98: This accretion consists almost entirely of class photographs of graduates of attendant training courses and later of the Utica State Hospital School of Nursing. A few group photos of staff are also included. Individuals depicted are usually identified. There are gaps in the span dates for this accretion.

B1559-13: This accretion consists of class photographs of students who attended the Utica State Hospital (later Utica Psychiatric Center) School of Nursing. It also includes one photograph of students who attended the Marcy State Hospital School of Nursing.
