Scope and Content Note

The series consists of "minutes" (summaries) and abstracts of mortgages documenting the loaning of state money for land purchase and development in Ulster County.

The volume of original minutes of mortgages (1808-1817) documents mortgages made as a result of earlier legislation to promote statewide land ownership and development. Each entry includes mortgage number, mortgage date; mortgagee; and summary of terms of the mortgage, including the amount of mortgage (in pounds) and a description of land bound by the mortgage. Signatures and seals for each of the minutes are originals. There is a name index at the fore of the volume.

The volume of abstracts of mortgages (1792-1823) pertains to mortgages remaining unsatisfied and includes sections for both "old" and "new" loans. The record book was prepared by the "new loan officers of the County of Ulster" pursuant to an act passed on April 17, 1823 (Ch. 180). Each abstract provides the date of mortgage; mortgagee; amount or "consideration" of the mortgage; amount of principal due and interest paid (in dollars); and a brief description of land bound by the mortgage. The abstracts bear no signatures or seals. There is a name index at the end of the volume.
