Scope and Content Note

This series records those "reported on elopement," that is, those who escaped ("eloped") from the Syracuse State School from 1934-1953. Dates of discharge or parole, noted only as the final disposition of escape cases, are present sporadically. Entries are arranged according to the month in which the escape was reported; this corresponds to a chronological arrangement by actual escape date (an escape may have occurred earlier than the month in which it is recorded). Periodic notes appear of dates that escapes were reported to the Medical Inspector (probably during routine checks of the facility).

Volume 1 notes those who were reported as escaped during July 1935 through April 1945. Information includes date reported, name, date of escape, date of return, and remarks/disposition.

Volume 2 notes those who escaped during April 1945 through March 1953. Information includes name, time and date "eloped," date returned, and a final "disposition" statement. Summaries for the fiscal year show numbers of females, males, and total reportable escapes, returns from escapes and (sometimes) numbers "discharged" from escape (i.e., status changed to home visit, vacation, etc.).
