Scope and Content Note

The New York State Department of Transportation and its predecessor agency, the Department of Public Works, possessed a sophisticated cartographic unit where they created a variety of maps for their purposes and for other state agencies and local governments. These maps are a variety that either directly or tangentially relate to transportation functions. The maps pertain to numerous subjects including the state's canal system, coastal areas, community water systems, power pools, gasoline facilities, Finger Lakes bicycle touring facilities, North Country trail maps, Adirondack Northway motorist assistance facilities, North-South Expressway, State Office Campus, Empire State Plaza, Adirondack Park, Cranberry Lake, Sacandaga Lake, Lake George, municipal boundaries, and the New York State Thruway.

B1903-12: This accretion contains a Department of Health Atlas of Community Water Systems, maps of legislative districts, Department of Transportation action program planning maps, state atlases and gazetteer, highway condition maps, highway planning material, motorist maps, recreation maps, Adirondack North Country Region maps, "I Love New York" tourism map, New York State Thruway maps, and other map-related documents.
