Scope and Content Note

The bulk of this series consists of the subject files and correspondence of Mildred McChesney, Chief of the Bureau of Social Studies for the Department of Education, from 1934-1970. The subject files include notes, pamphlets, and agendas from professional conferences, announcements, newsletters, and copies of Regents exams over the years, and news clippings regarding the curriculum development of Social Studies during her tenure. Also included are records about the organization of the Education Department from the 1950s and 1960s. The correspondence files are from teachers, colleagues, and principals regarding the further development of Social Studies records in school curricula in New York and other state education departments.

Records regarding the Social Studies curriculum before 1934 and after 1970 are included as well as theses, speeches, news clippings, conference notes and agendas, and correspondence to former colleagues in the Education Department.
