Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson, a Democrat, was first elected to the Senate in 2000 after serving on the Mount Vernon City Council (1993-1999). She has represented the 33rd Senate District (2001-2002) and the 36th Senate District (2003-present), which consists of portions of the Bronx neighborhoods of Morrisania, West Farms, Williamsbridge, Co-op City, Wakefield, and Baychester, and the City of Mount Vernon in Westchester County. She has served as the Chair of the Standing Committee on Crime and Correction (2009-2010).
