Scope and Content Note

Calendars contain lists of cases and brief notes of proceedings before the Vice-Chancellor or Assistant Vice-Chancellor in the First Circuit (New York City). Some entries include lists of papers read or submitted. Calendars include both adversarial cases, commenced by bill of complaint, and non-adversarial cases, commenced by petition.

Entry of September 19, 1845, contains a tribute to the late Joseph Story, Associate Justice, Supreme Court of the United States. Final volume is a calendar of proceedings before the Assistant Vice-Chancellor, 1843-1846. It contains detailed summaries of motions made and documents read or submitted, but no information on decisions. An entry of February 2, 1846, includes lengthy notes of testimony and documentary evidence submitted in the case of Nathaniel Bogardus and others vs. The Rector, Church Wardens, and Vestrymen of Trinity Church, in the City of New York, and others.
