These records were transferred by the New York State Unified Court System, Office of Court Administration in 2017.

Custodial History

Laws of 1799, Chapter 5, authorized the Clerk of the Supreme Court of Judicature in New York City to destroy "with all convenient speed" indictments and other criminal case papers pre-dating July 9, 1776.

Staff of the Unified Court System found these surviving documents in several locations in New York County Clerk's Office.
