Scope and Content Note

This series consists of verbatim transcripts of debates in the Assembly legislative sessions. The records are typescript copies from notes taken by the Assembly Stenographer and are contained in looseleaf binders. The debates contain the names of speakers and a complete record of what was said on the floor of the Assembly.

Stenographic notes of Assembly debates have been taken since 1872 (Assembly Rule #70), but were not made available to the public until 1972. Transcripts of these debates, furthermore, were not available until 1974 when a change in the rule provided that daily records shall be made available "at a place designated by the Speaker within ten days following the date upon which the proceedings took place." Transcripts are available at the Assembly Public Information Office.
