Scope and Content Note

The series consists of rough drafts, revised copies, and corrected or updated versions of speeches delivered by Assemblyman William Hoyt to various community advocacy and professional groups, and copies of testimony given during legislative hearings. Also included are a small amount of correspondence (acknowledging invitations and thanking hosts after participation in events); copies of announcements, programs, publicity statements, and fliers relating to various conferences or worships at which the speeches were given; and newspaper clippings and editorial commentary on the symposium, graduation, or other attended event.

Some files contain extensive background information (including a few published reports, copies of relevant bills, etc.) and handwritten notes or annotated typescripts. The speeches document the positions, interests, and activities of Assemblyman Hoyt. Speech topics overwhelmingly deal with child abuse and domestic violence issues. Many relate to the initiative sponsored by Assemblyman Hoyt to form a Children's Trust Fund targeting tax money for community based prevention programs. To a lesser extent, education and energy constituencies are also represented in the speeches.
