Scope and Content Note

The series consists of files on consumer issues and products covered during the committee's efforts to develop legislation and investigate matters of consumer protection under its jurisdiction. Included in the files are incoming and outgoing correspondence; internal memoranda; research reports completed by committee staff or received from state agencies or private organizations; newspaper and magazine clippings; draft legislation; and background materials relevant to specific issues studied by the committee. Also present is a small amount of administrative material, annual reports, and published guides to consumer affairs.

Present materials include documentation of investigations and projects into issues such as item pricing; automobile "lemon laws"; open dating; toxic art supplies; standardized packaging; smokeless tobacco; cable television; the Uniform Commercial Code and food labeling; car rentals and auto leasing; health club contracts; direct mail marketing; banking issues such as credit card fraud and interest rates; and hazardous substances such as asbestos or urea-formaldehyde.
