Custodial History

A memorandum from C. P. Lenart, Lt. Col., NYNG and Director, Personnel Bureau, to Jesse Merritt, Suffolk County Historian, dated Aug. 11, 1941 and found in series 13729, Organization rosters of military officers, explains why there are no militia muster rolls in this series that pre-date 1878: ". . . A fire that consumed part of the Capitol Building in 1911, destroyed the Muster Rolls of enlisted men who served in the Militia prior to 1879 . . ."

13726-08: This accretion resulted from a project by State Archives staff in 2008 to identify, describe, and accession estrayed records. Why and when these volumes were separated from the main series is unknown.
