Summary:
University of the State of New York (USNY) diplomas were awarded to graduates of approved college programs who also successfully passed an examination administered by the University. These "University degrees" were intended to represent higher achievement than did an ordinary college degree. These volumes contain a record of bachelor's degree diplomas awarded by USNY in the fields of law and divinity.

Administrative History

USNY diplomas were awarded to graduates of approved college programs who also successfully passed an examination administered by the University. These "University degrees" were intended to represent higher achievement than did an ordinary college degree.

Scope and Content Note

These volumes contain a record of bachelor's degree diplomas awarded by the University of the State of New York (USNY) in the fields of law and divinity.

The register of Bachelor of Divinity degrees (1897-1917) gives the following information: register entry number; name of degree recipient; name of school recommending the student; preliminary education; professional education; date and amount of fee received; date of diploma; diploma number; and date and by what method (e.g. "express") diploma was sent.

The register of Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degrees (1892-1896) provide the same information, plus the following: "evidence completed"; date card of admission was sent; date and place of examination; examination scores in subjects such as elementary law, real property, equity/jurisprudence/wills; general average score; and degree with or without honors.

Custodial History

This series was transferred to the New York State Library at an unknown date and then transferred to the Archives in 1978 as old collection #73, accession number - 70.
