Scope and Content Note

This series consists of lists of "Insolvents of Taxes" for several wards of New York City, submitted by the collectors for each ward to the City Treasurer, who transmitted them to the State Comptroller. The lists provide the following information: names, amount of tax owed, and sometimes addresses and reasons for non-payment ("not found," "gone," "too poor," "insolvent," or "dead"). There are also cover letters and statements of Daniel Phoenix, City Treasurer, and miscellaneous receipts and accounts of collectors.
