Administrative History
The Canal Fund was created by an act passed on April 15, 1817. The Canal Fund was managed by the Commissioners of the Canal Fund, which consisted of the Lieutenant Governor, Comptroller, Attorney General, Surveyor General, Secretary of State and Treasurer.
Scope and Content Note
This series contains two volumes (March 1829 to December 1840; January 1841 to February 1855) and one index (not comprehensive) that accompanies the records. The Canal Fund was concerned with the financial aspects of canal business and included, but was not limited to the following: disbursement of funds (upon the Comptroller's approval) as payment to the Superintendent of Canal's account of expenses (April 18, 1831); Erie and Champlain Canal stock purchases (November 21, 1833); redemption of canal stock by individual stock holders (May 10, 1833); other matters pertaining to printing orders and stock certificates; and the Erie Canal enlargement fund, temporary loans, etc.
