Administrative History
During the War of 1812 Governor Tompkins had been an agent of both the Federal and State governments and had received and disbursed large sums of money. He was unable to produce vouchers for many of the expenditures and the comptroller's records showed him to be in debt to the state for approximately $120,000. (James Roberts, A Century in the Comptroller's Office.)
Scope and Content Note
Abstract of expenditures by Governor Daniel D. Tompkins for ordnance, pay for military service, and individual claims relating to the War of 1812.
This register is part of the effort to settle the accounts between the Comptroller's office and Governor Tompkins. The register gives voucher number, date, person to whom payment was made, amount allowed, amount suspended, and amount rejected. Handwritten notes by the person reviewing the vouchers are included.
