Scope and Content Note
This series consists of invoices of ordnance and ordnance stores, receipts, monthly ordnance returns, incoming correspondence, requisitions, duplicate bills and invoices, and lists of military expenditures directed to and generated by the Commissary General's Office.
This officer is essentially responsible for the preservation, issue and transportation of the arms, equipment and other military property of the state. The 1863 General Regulations For the Military Forces specifies that it will be the Commissary General's duty to issue arms, equipment, camp equipage, and ammunition from the state's arsenals and armories; make monthly reports of all issues made by him; and take receipts for arms, equipment and property issued by him.
The records in this series clearly reflect these duties. The invoices, receipts, and returns of ordnance, although incomplete, provide detailed information on the types of arms, equipment and accoutrements stored by state arsenals and armories and which were issued to both volunteer and National Guard (militia) units. The correspondence basically pertains to the procurement and issuance of arms by the state to its military forces. In addition, numerous records document the purchase of arms by the state from private firms such as Remington and Sons.
