Scope and Content Note
This series consists of copies of records for canal lands originally held in the Monroe County Clerk's office. These records include copies of deeds, releases of damage, claims for damages, awards given to claimants, and descriptions of land appropriations. The bulk of the records in this volume deal with financial awards given for appropriation of or damage to land during the construction and enlargement of the Erie Canal. The records include reason for award, description of damage caused to the land, and amount awarded to the claimant. The records usually list names of appraisers, name of claimant, whether the claim was awarded or denied, amount awarded, town or city in which land was situated, description of land, and liber book in which appropriation was recorded.
