Administrative History

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority was established in 1965 as the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Authority in order to regulate and subsidize commuter railroads in the New York City metropolitan area. It assumed its current name in 1968, when it assumed responsibility for the operations of the New York City Transit Authority and the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority. It is responsible for developing and implementing a unified public transportation policy for the five boroughs of New York City and the counties of Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester. It also provides transit service to two southeastern Connecticut counties on a contractual basis.

Scope and Content Note

This series consists of archival copies of the publicly accessible websites of the New York State Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Researchers should note that these sites were not captured in 2014 or 2015 and that repeated attempts to capture the main Metropolitan Transportation Authority site in 2019 and 2020 were unsuccessful.

B2139-07: This accretion contains a copy of the main Metropolitan Transportation Authority site produced on May 5, 2007, shortly after Governor George E. Pataki (1995-2006) left office. It contains information about the authority's mission and leadership, presentations delivered by the authority's executive director and chief executive officer (2002-2007), budgets and financial statements (2003-2007), press releases (1997-2007), transportation planning studies, procurement policies and lists of procurement opportunities (2007), investor information (2001-2006), and a 2005-2009 capital plan.

It also includes background information, financial and performance indicators, project overviews, and other information concerning seven of the authority's constituent agencies: New York City Transit, Long Island Rail Road, Long Island Bus, MetroNorth Rail Road, MTA Bridges and Tunnels, MTA Bus, and MTA Capital Construction Company. New York City subway and bus schedules; subway, bus, and railroad maps; and rules and regulations are also included.

This accretion also includes copies of two other Metropolitan Transportation Authority sites: the Transit Employee Extranet site (copied April 12, 2007) and Long Island Rail Road site (copied December 29, 2006). Researchers should note that, owing to the structure of the live site and the limitations of Web archiving technology, only the home pages of these sites could be captured successfully. Researchers should also note that, owing to technical problems, subsequent attempts to capture the Long Island Rail Road site have been unsuccessful.

B2139-08: This accretion contains a copy of the main Metropolitan Transportation Authority Web produced on June 10, 2008, shortly after the resignation of Governor Eliot L. Spitzer (2007-2008). It contains information about the authority's mission, leadership, and committee structure; presentations delivered by the authority's executive director and chief executive officer (2007-2008); budgets and financial statements (2003-2008); press releases (1997-2008); transportation planning studies; procurement policies and lists of procurement opportunities (2008); investor information (2001-2008); and a 2005-2009 capital plan.

New York Transit Museum visitor information; New York City subway and bus schedules; subway, bus, and railroad maps; and rules and regulations are also included.

This accretion also contains copies of two other Metropolitan Transportation Authority sites. The New York City Transit Employee Extranet site (copied June 10, 2008) contains memorandums, directories, and other health benefit information; information about employee training programs; letters from the authority's president outlining workplace policies; Metropolitan Transportation Authority employee newsletters (2001-2006); and other information of interest to New York City Transit employees.

Researchers should note that all the information on this site can be accessed only by mousing over the "Employee Extranet Home" link at the top left of each page and then clicking on the links that will appear to the right of the "Employee Extranet Home" link; none of the other links on the left side or at the top of each page work correctly. Researchers should also note that, owing to the structure of the live site and the limitations of Web archiving technology, some of the information contained within this site could not be captured correctly.

The New York City Transit Retirees site (copied June 10, 2008) contains pension and retirement savings program information, enrollment memorandums and other health benefits information, information about discounted Broadway show tickets, Metropolitan Transportation Authority employee newsletters (2001-2006), and other information of interest to retired New York City Transit employees.

Researchers should note that all this information must be accessed by mousing over and clicking the "Retiree Online Home" link at the top left of each page and clicking on the links that will appear to the right of the "Retiree Online Home" link; none of the other links on the left side or at the top of each page work correctly. Researchers should also note that some of the information contained within this site could not be captured correctly.

B2139-10: This accretion consists of a copy of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority site produced on December 18, 2010, shortly before Governor David A. Paterson (2008-2010) left office.

This accretion also includes December 17, 2010 copies of the authority's Long Island Railroad and New York City Transit Retirees sites.
