Scope and Content Note
Records in this series include data sheets, coding sheets, abstracts of patient records, and reports. Included are records relating to the Baxstrom patient research study and the pre-Baxstrom research study in the 1970s, which examined individuals transferred from hospitals of the criminally insane under the Department of Correctional Services to the civil mental hospitals in the Department of Mental Hygiene. This study followed the landmark ruling Baxstrom v. Herold, 383 U.S. 107 (1966), which led to major changes in studies and in state policies.
