Scope and Content Note

This series consists of copies of two maps of the Cattaraugus Reservation. First map dated 1843 indicates the survey was done by Joseph Jones and Peter Emslie. Information includes lot numbers, acreage, and boundaries lengths in chains; roads; major streams; and scale in chains.

The second map was surveyed by Charles E. Fink in 1878 in accordance with an act of Congress of May 25, 1878. Survey and field notes were approved by the Department of the Interior General Land Office Acting Commissioner. Copies of this map were sent to the President of the Seneca Nation and to the Clerk of Erie County New York, December 17, 1878.

This map includes location of houses with last names of residents; roads; boundaries with magnetic courses and chain lengths; and major and minor streams.

Custodial History

These maps were copied from originals in the Erie County Clerk's Office. They were donated to the New York State Archives by the Hanover, New York Town Historian in 2016.
