Scope and Content Note

The series consists of the files of the executive director of the Adirondack Park Agency, who is responsible for the agency's overall administration, including oversight of the Adirondack Park Private Land Use and Development Plan, the State Land Master Plan, and various mandates to protect the Park and enhance economic development for its residents. Since 1988 the executive director has also been fulfilling duties of the APA counsel's office.

18855-94: The records of Herman F. Cole, Jr., chairman of the Adirondack Park Agency, include subject and correspondence files on a variety of environmental issues, long-range planning documents, a few administrative records (travel and requisitions), and copies of speeches and papers delivered by the director.

Significant topics covered in the files include ozone depletion, acid rain, landfills, milfoil, outback development, land use and assessment studies, and fresh water land mapping. Also included are: letters and monthly reports to the governor, as well as information relating to the energy and environment subcabinet, the governor's Forest Industry Task Force, and the Adirondack Park Commission; files for Visitor Interpretive Centers at Paul Smiths, Beaver Lake, Newcomb, and other satellite facilities; and information on 1992 Adirondack Park centennial.
