Scope and Content Note

The series consists of files created upon review of a state or federal project which may affect so-called "cultural resources" (structures or archaeological sites) that are listed, or are eligible to be listed, on the national or state Register of Historic Places.

Individual "project review files" vary greatly in size and content; there are few standard forms. However, a project review checklist is often included which shows data on the project sponsor and a description of the project. Many small project files, especially those labeled "no effect," contain a few pieces of correspondence. Larger project files almost always contain a copy of a draft of the final environmental impact statement (EIS) or a somewhat less detailed environmental assessment.

Project review files do not contain the results of detailed reviews by the Bureau of Historic Preservation Field Services; the bureau files those reviews in a separate series (entitled "Cultural Resources Survey Reports").
