Scope and Content Note

These logs contain data on approximately 20,000 oil, gas, and solution salt wells drilled since 1930. An oil or gas well log is a detailed graphic/narrative record that progressively describes the geological strata and any oil, gas, or water that is encountered during the drilling of a well. The logs provide a wealth of detail not only about the location of oil and gas resources in the state, but also significant data concerning the surficial geology, minerological, sedimentological, geochemical, seismological, and petrological characteristics of the geographical areas in which the wells are located.

A significant amount of information on various technical aspects of each well is also included. This information consists of data on volume, pressure, rate of fill up, water depth, caving strata, and casing record. The logs also describe how the data was obtained, depth tested, cushion used, significant time intervals involved, flowing and shut-in pressures, and notes of recoveries.

20976-02: This accretion consists of microfiche copies of oil and gas well logs for the years 1930-1984. The microform was produced from the originals at the New York State Geological Survey by a private vendor for the Dept. of Environmental Conservation.

20976-05A: This accretion consists of oil and gas well logs, ca. 2003-2005, for sites in Cayuga, Chemung, Steuben, Tioga, and Yates Counties.

20976-07A: This accretion consists of oil and gas well logs for sites in Allegany, Cattaraugus, Cayuga, Chautauqua, Chemung, Chenango, Erie, Genesee, Livingston, Madison, Onondaga, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Sullivan, Tioga, Wyoming and Yates Counties.
