Scope and Content Note

The first volume in this series was used to log correspondence received each business day by the Secretary of State's office. Each entry includes name of correspondent, place from which correspondence was sent, date of correspondence, and a very brief abstract of the content. Most correspondence involves requests for certification of deeds, satisfaction pieces, mortgages, powers of attorney, and appointments. Other correspondence involves requests for copies of deeds and laws, filing of alien depositions and articles of association, and applications for peddler's licenses.

The second volume was used to log instruments (legal documents such as deeds, bonds, leases, assignments of morgages, certificates of incorporation, and affidavits) received by the secretary's office. Each entry includes name of person or entity from which instrument was received, date received, type of instrument, and date and means by which instrument was returned. Recording of these entries was continued in the back of the volume described above.
