Scope and Content Note

This series consists of maps of both proposed and completed state, county and municipal public works projects. The maps, which were generated by the Postwar Public Works Planning Commission, depict two types of construction: highways and non-highway projects (sewer systems, housing projects, etc). The highway maps are executed in color and mark the location of primary and secondary systems, thruways, parkways, and arterial highways. The maps also differentiate between county, state and federally funded highways as well as those taken over for maintenance or acquired through a special law by the state.

The non-highway maps designate between state and municipal projects and the type of project (barge canal, housing, grade crossing eliminations and reconstructions, bridges, schools, heavy construction, sidewalks, miscellaneous parks, rods, sewers, water supply or buildings). They also outline both existing and proposed state and county roads as well as state owned lands. These maps are also executed in color. Boxes one and four contain the legends for each sub-series.
