Scope and Content Note

This series consists of records of the commissioners of Indian affairs and of state Indian agents. A law of 1779 appointed commissioners to ensure the security of the people of the state against future hostilities, and to demand compensation from Indians for previous hostilities. The commissioners were to be compensated for expenses incurred in carrying out their duties.

The records contain: abstracts of annuities paid to Indians; certificates of actions taken by agents; accounts; bills from agents for making treaties; receipts for annuities; receipts of payment for service by agents; sales of Indian bonds; correspondence; and other records of Indians and Indian commissioners and agents.
