Scope and Content Note

These are mostly 5" x 7"; glass plate negatives, with a few 5" x 7" sheet negatives and photographs of roads in eastern upstate New York. The negatives and photographs show: machinery and vehicles used to construct or resurface roads; road work in progress; roads damaged by floods or in various states of disrepair; roads after improvements have been made; roads with various surfaces (macadam, concrete); new or experimental road signs; railroad crossings and underpasses; and scenes of automobile accidents.

The pictures were probably taken at the direction of the division engineer of the Albany division office in keeping with his duties to plan highway improvement, construction and maintenance for his division, to examine work done on the highways, and to inspect all state and county highways in his division and report on them to the State Highway Commission when requested.
