Scope and Content Note

Microfilmed records include files of the Supreme Court and the County Court, recorded deeds, and other series of documents in the office of the Lewis County Clerk or other county offices.

Microfilmed civil court records (intermixed files from the County Court and Supreme Court) include complaints (1838-1907), judgment rolls (i.e., civil court case files) (1822-1934), referees' reports (1852-1909), sheriff's reports of sales (1820-1949), satisfactions (1901-1980), and various documents relating to appealed cases.

Separate series of Supreme Court files include affidavits (1857-1907), orders (1860-1917), executions (1901-1955), lunacy proceedings (i.e., commitments to mental institutions 1847-1897), infancy proceedings (i.e. appointments of trustees for property of minors, 1851-1912), and committee reports (1889-1916). Separate series of County Court files include orders (1834-1917) and affidavits (1868-1919).

Criminal court records include indictment files (1888-1938) and records of convictions in town and village justice's courts (various dates). Other microfilmed records from the county clerk's office are deeds (1805-1951; indexes not filmed), notary public appointments (1805-1968), lis pendens (1827-1908), and coroner's inquisitions (1894-1931). Also microfilmed were county treasurer's tax assessment rolls for the towns in Lewis County (1981-1982).
