Scope and Content Note

This series consists of handbooks (manuals) published annually by the State Education Department documenting its regulation of the nursing profession. Although information varies over time, the handbooks generally contain statutory requirements; regulations of the commissioner of the State Education Dept.; and a variety of other information pertinent to ongoing examinations, education, and certification of nurses. Some handbooks contain a list of Nursing Board members with dates of the expiration of their terms, special area of expertise, and institutional affiliation.

Some years include a listing of nursing schools in the United States and Canada approved by the Board of Nursing and a brief synopsis of nursing requirements in each state including preliminary education, professional training, licensing tests, and registry.

Most of the handbooks are entitled "Registration of Nurses: Law, Rules and Information." The title is later changed to "Higher Education: Nursing Law, Rules and Information." All these handbooks are designated as "number 13." A variety of other handbooks produced by the Education Dept. and other state agencies (ca. 1918-1956) are scattered throughout the series.
