Scope and Content Note

The series consists primarily of State Education Department (SED) handbooks (1902-1965) containing lists of component institutions and organizations that make up the University of the State of New York; that is, public and private educational institutions with approved courses of study, or programs that have been incorporated or chartered by SED. Such institutions include colleges and universities; normal schools, (teacher) training schools and classes; academies; business schools; nursing schools; libraries; and historical societies. In addition, the series contains a quantity of annual handbooks specifying the regulations relating to the certification of schoolteachers.

B1619-01: This accretion consists copies of State Education Department Handbook 24 entitled "Organizations and Institutions of The University of the State of New York." Commencing in 1968, the information previously published in Handbook 24 was published in four separate booklets: Handbook 24-a (personnel of the State Education Department); Handbook 24-b (a directory of elementary and secondary schools); Handbook 24-c (higher institutions, business and occupational schools); and Handbook 24-d (public libraries, historical societies, and museums). This accretion contains only Handbook 24-b of the 1968-1970 series and Handbook 24-d of the 1970-1972 series. The handbooks contain handwritten annotations produced by office staff of the Secretary to the Board of Regents.
