Scope and Content Note

This series consists of mylar masters and paper prints of 1: 9600-scale urban area planimetric maps. The 36" x 48" maps provide large-scale coverage (one inch represents 800 feet) of the larger urban areas of the state, with the exception of New York City. Portions of the Department of Transportation's 1: 24,000-scale planimetric edition maps were enlarged to produce the maps in this series. Generally, each urban area map represents the north or south half of a 7.5 minute, 1: 24,000-scale quadrangle. In most cases, several individual urban area maps must be combined to provide complete coverage of an urban area.

Additional local street names were added to the 1: 24,000-scale maps in creating the maps in this series. Map features retained from 1: 24,000-scale maps include: roads, route identification, railroads, airfields, civil boundaries, community names, water features, and the State Plane Coordinate and New York Transverse Mercator grid systems. To improve the clarity of the urban area maps, light gray tints used to demarcate built-up areas were deleted. Likewise, only those buildings of landmark significance were included.
