Scope and Content Note

The 6 registers in this series list attorneys and counselors-at-law throughout New York State who filed an oath or affirmation with the clerk of the New York State Court of Appeals as required by laws of 1898 and 1899.

The entry for each attorney or counselor lists his or her name; residence (city or village); court where admitted to practice law (for most it was the Supreme Court General Term, before 1896, or Supreme Court Appellate Division, starting 1896); and the month, year, and place of admission. The registers were published in 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902, 1903, and 1904. Each volume contains the certification of the clerk of the Court of Appeals that the published version was a true copy of the original register. Some of the attorneys listed were admitted to practice as early as the 1840s. Attorneys and counselors who did not file the required oath or affirmation were not permitted to appear before any court of record, or to practice law.
