Custodial History

The United States War Department obtained the "miscellaneous numbered" Revolutionary War records (The Manuscript File) from a variety of sources over a period spanning from 1894 to 1937. The three principal sources included other executive departments of the federal government, individual state governments, and private citizens. A significant portion of the New York-related records were borrowed from the New York State Comptroller's Office and copied by the War Department's Record and Pension Office in 1896. This date is significant because these records later suffered extensive damage and losses in the New York State Capitol building fire of 1911. The copies created by the War Department constitute the only surviving copies of many documents destroyed in the 1911 fire.
