Scope and Content Note
The series consists of copies of a dependent re-survey of portions of the boundary of the Allegany Indian Reservation and portions of the village lines within the reservation at Cattauragus County, New York. Included are two copies of a survey map and a forty-four page duplicate copy of associated field notes. The city of Salamanca is located on land leased from the Indians. These records probably relate to a dispute which occurred when the long-term lease of that property ended.
Labeled as "O.G.S. Map No. 1608," the map shows the survey executed by cadastral surveyor Anthony E. Carrow from July 28 to October 2, 1987. The maps show the villages of Salamanca; West Salamanca; Carrolton; Great Valley; Vandalia; and the Allegheny River. The field notes contain a history of prior resurvey done in 1875-1876, and a general description of the Allegany Reservation, which occupies about 42 square miles from the New York-Pennsylvania line and up the Allegheny River valley. The certificate of survey is dated July 1987; the certificate of approval is dated February 14, 1989.
