In the 1960s, the Joint Legislative Committee on Crime, Its Causes, Control and Effect on Society was formed due to the increase in crime in the state and the nation. It was suspected that organized crime was reaching into part of everyday community life. The committee also studied the illegal use of narcotics, the publication of obscene material, juvenile delinquency, and the control of firearms and ammunition.
The New York State Archives is part of the Office of Cultural Education, an office of the New York State Education Department.
