Administrative History

Apparently, the Joint Volunteer Relief Committee was a charitable organization which provided monetary assistance to needy families of men from Albany who had volunteered for service during the Civil War. The Committee relied on donations from local businessmen and concerned citizens for its funding.

Scope and Content Note

This series consists of two folio-sized volumes containing records of relief payments made by the Joint Volunteer Relief Committee of Albany, otherwise known as the Military Relief Committee.

The pay roll provides name of the recipient; street address; regiment and company; marital status (including number of children); remarks; amount of weekly allowance; and a record of weekly payments disbursed. In addition, volume one contains a printed map of the City of Albany dated 1851.

Custodial History

According to the 1864 annual report of the Bureau of Military Statistics, these two volumes were donated to the bureau by Hiram Perry, a member of the Committee's finance committee, in 1864. Volume one contains the letter of transmittal from Perry to Lockwood L. Doty, the bureau's first chief.
